What to Know About the Upcoming Nicotine Regulations
Changes are coming to Australia’s nicotine import laws. A range of new measures intended to support a smoke-free future are coming, but will these new regulations make it easier to stop smoking, or will they come between smokers and the most effective way to quit?
Below, we look at the impact Australia’s new nicotine regulations will have on the vaping community and how you can adapt to these new regulations.
How to Get a Prescription
Your General Practitioner (GP) can provide a prescription for vaping at their discretion, should they believe that it’s appropriate for your journey away from nicotine and smoking addiction.
Discuss your needs with a doctor and bring up the option of vaping with them, letting them know how it may have helped you up until now, or how you feel it might benefit you on your journey. If they feel it’s appropriate, they will write the prescription for you.
If your GP is not able to provide a prescription, there is a list of doctors that will be able to access you and provide a prescription if it is appropriate. The list is as below:

October 2021 Nicotine Regulations Overview
Beginning 1st October 2021, consumers importing nicotine products to vape for smoking cessation will require a valid medical prescription. Additionally, nicotine E-liquids will require child-proof mechanisms.
The introduction of these vaping restrictions is due to the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s independent regulatory decision to support smoking cessation. The TGA acknowledges that vaping is a pathway for smoking cessation via controlled nicotine uptake, and this decision balances that need with preventing adolescents and young adults from taking up nicotine E-cigarettes.
What do these changes mean for you as a vaper?
The new regulations will make it slightly more complicated to access vaping products. However, it’s not impossible! Consumers can still import nicotine E-cigarettes and E-liquids legally through the TGA Personal Importation Scheme. Under the Personal Importation Scheme, you’re allowed to import a 3-month supply of therapeutic goods at a time.
According to TGA, “Any medical practitioner who considers it is appropriate for their patient to use nicotine E-cigarettes for smoking cessation can prescribe nicotine E-cigarettes for personal importation. Medical practitioners do not need TGA approval to prescribe nicotine E-cigarettes for their patient when they access them through the personal importation scheme.”
Basically, if you’re vaping to quit smoking, which is now recognised as a legitimate avenue for kicking the habit, you can talk to a medical practitioner about your concerns. Simply get a valid medical prescription from a doctor, present your prescription to Shosha! And you’re all set.*
